What is the best way to promote my website?

Well I have chosen a tricky subject to answer today as this is such an open question and completely depends upon the nature of your business. However, I will try and point out the best methods you can use to promote your own website and get it working for your business.

Use the free source of visitors - the search engines

The first and most important aspect to consider is search engine optimisation. If you regularly pop up on page one of search results, you can be sure that you will start to get many visitors to your website. Search engine optimisation is discussed in many other articles on this site so I will leave the details to those pages as it is such a wide ranging subject. The main thing I will say here is that this should be a long term and permanent goal for your website but you should not entirely reply upon it as there are many other ways for businesses to find your website.

Google Products and Price Comparison Service

If you have an e-commerce website, the Google Products service is an excellent way to sell your goods. It is completely free and it can quickly push your product sales pages right to the top of the search results. If you make sure that you also upload the EAN (the bar code) then you will soon be added to their new price comparison service and the signs are at this early stage that this will push you ahead of your competitors as many businesses are ill prepared for this.

Pay-per-click advertising

Google AdWords is one of the main ways to promote all kinds of websites. It means you can advertise on the world's most popular search engine immediately on page 1. This is great but you must be careful when setting up your ad campaign. Make sure you set a daily limit as this can instantly empty your bank account if not fully controlled. Change your bids and your adverts on a regular basis to see what works best. You do not want to be paying for click-throughs to your website if they are not translating into sales.

Many websites offer banner adverts and costs can range from the very reasonable to the astronomical. Choose adverts to which you do not have to commit for a long period. This allows you to test the water without too much business expense. Finding the right site on which to advertise can lead to a lot of business for your website at a relatively low cost.

Traditional promotion

Al letterheads, business cards and other promotional materials should contain your website address. Your website can back up all traditional forms of advertising. Some customers will call your phone number if they see the advert but many more will visit your website to check you out. This is why you should always make sure your website looks great and is kept up to date.
